LASA Development Pathway
Club Statement: Development Pathway Clarification
April 2024
At Coalville Swimming Club, our primary focus is to provide a well-rounded, inclusive, and supportive environment where swimmers of all ages can grow, enjoy the sport, and achieve their individual goals. From our youngest members just beginning their swimming journey to our senior and masters swimmers, we aim to create a space that fosters development, confidence, and lifelong involvement in aquatics.
Our Development Philosophy
Our coaching programme is designed to guide swimmers through every stage of their progression, focusing on:
- Building strong foundational skills and technique
- Developing race skills through internal galas and licensed open meets
- Encouraging team spirit and participation
- Supporting swimmers through to regional-level competition and beyond
We believe in balancing athletic development with the importance of friendship, enjoyment, and life outside the pool. This approach not only supports athletic success but also encourages swimmers to stay involved in the sport long-term — whether recreationally, competitively, or through coaching and volunteering.
Development Pathway Position
Since 2020, we have followed an agreement with Leicestershire Amateur Swimming Association (LASA) to support the Leicestershire Development Pathway for swimmers aged 12 and above, in line with Swim England guidance. This reflects our belief that younger swimmers benefit most from growing within their base club environment before entering performance-based programmes.
We are not signed up to the current LASA memorandum of understanding with CoL as it doesn't fully align with our club values and principals. However, we remain committed to open and honest conversations with families about each swimmer’s development needs. When appropriate, we will offer guidance and support toward City of Leicester or other pathways — and will always support swimmers who choose to swim for both clubs.
Our Club Community
Coalville SC is proud of its inclusive club culture. We support:
Junior, senior, and masters swimmers
Non-competitive swimmers training for fitness
Dual club swimmers who wish to maintain membership with us
Long-term development, with many swimmers returning to the club after university
Our team of qualified coaches and committed volunteers — many of whom have been swimmers, parents, officials, and mentors — dedicate their time to ensuring every swimmer receives the attention, encouragement, and structure they need to thrive.
Looking Ahead
As a club, we aim to continue providing a balanced, athlete-first approach that prepares swimmers not just for races — but for a lifelong love of the water. We will always work in the best interests of our swimmers and their families, supporting each individual path while staying true to our club values.
If you have any questions or would like to speak with a coach, please contact Rachel Daft, Interim General Secretary, who will be happy to assist.
Thank you for being a part of Coalville Swimming Club.
